Culture | You Have The Right To Remain Fat

As a smaller fat woman, I often find myself in the position where non-fat people feel I am a safe audience for all of their thoughts about fatness. The good, the bad and the downright fricking terrible. Every time this happens, I bite my tongue, recall that that *I* have a responsibility to my larger sisters and brothers, to set people straight and to educate on a few basics.

Only sometimes it's hard (Albeit not as hard as being abused on a daily basis..), sometimes I forget all the things I know, all the big words, the politics of it all. I just want to stop and shout BUT YOU ARE WRONG HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THIS WHY ARE YOU NOT GETTING IT PLEASE?

Five Minutes On Loss

Trigger Warning: Detailed talk of child loss/medical experiences.

I've been a bit of funk of late and could not for the life of it get to the bottom of what's going on. Then it hit me: My head has reached capacity.

We go through so many things in our lives. Some bad and some marvellous. Some we talk about and some we don't. Ultimately, I guess we must reach a point where we're fully loaded - That's one of the original reasons I started this blog; A space to vent, to share and maybe even somewhere that other big odd women can relate or refer to.

I absolutely do not want this to be a site that is SAD and SERIOUS because I am 100% neither, unless I am a. Hungover or b. Pretending I am an adult for a job/loan/other adult reasons. However, I have this space and I need to stay true to my original intentions.
I PROMISE MY NEXT POST WILL BE KNICKERS.

So here is a big folder that has been archived in my brain, on a topic that I've mentioned time and time again, because grief really is an emotion that never truly leaves you, regardless of whether you feel it should or whether the thing you lost is no longer something you need.

Five Minutes on Breaking Down

***Trigger Warning: Mental Health***

When I was 29 I had a breakdown.

It started as butterflies in my stomach.
A constant feeling of “something is wrong” without knowing what.
Then I started to forget words, simple words like potato and microwave (vital words in my jacket potato life).
I would go to work and “wake up” staring at my hands, not sure how long I’d been sitting that way and scared that people were noticing that I was quite clearly a massive weirdo.

Friends, I Have The Lurg.

Why am I telling you this you may wonder?
1. Maybe you care, I like it when people care. Thank you for caring.
2. If you follow me on social media then you'll have not seen much of me. Maybe this has been a good thing. Who knows. Anyway, live tweeting taking antibiotics or instagram grids full of duvets aren't much fun.
3. I'm very whiny. Deal with it.

Five Minutes on Who I Am And What I Want

Happy 2018 Party People!

You all know me fairly well by now and, as such, will know that in 2018 I will be paying no heed to New Years resolutions. I will, however, share with you some of the things I've learnt over the last 12 months and some of the things I'm going to keep on learning for likely forever because I'm a REALLY slow learner (Please see also; "Learning to drive" - Moving into year 17 of that and "Shaving my legs without bleeding to death" - Year 20)

I'm sorry this is going to be a bit of a round up post but it's mega picture heavy so you can have a good old peruse rather than a read if you so choose (read the words though eh, they took me a while to write. It's only nice)

You may remember that earlier in the year, Simply Be sent Steph and me to London for a London Fashion Week Tall Girl Takeover. For some unbeknown reason, they asked us again which was very lucky because we love them and also we love each other so it worked out beautifully.

Rethinking What Feels Good - The Cropped Jumpsuit

I really should have written this post ages ago but I didn't. The reasons for this are multiple but basically come down to the fact that I'm craving a holiday so hard that even just looking at myself having a nice time in the sun is like a knife to my sun-starved heart.

Bright As A Button - Arched Eyebrow x Navabi

This is a really special blog post, in that it's not every day I get to show off an item designed by one of my very special pals. Today is that day.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
Belted Shirt Dress - Arched Eyebrow x Navabi
Leopard Courts - Simply Be (Similar
When Navabi announced that they would be hooking up with plus size influencers to create three capsule wardrobes, we all knew that something special was afoot. Just imagine the excitement when they then announced that one of those influencers was the frankly incredible Bethany Rutter of Arched Eyebrow. Now Bethany is probably one of the most talented people I know so it stands to reason that she be able to design banging clothes, though I don't think anyone could have imagined just how stunning this range was going to be. Arched Eyebrow x Navabi is a riot of block colours, utilising classic tailoring and modern sillhouettes to give us a range so rarely seen in plus size ranges.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

The obvious thing that drew me to the belted dress was the colour - It is the most perfect green. Bright but not fluorescent, block but not boring. The next eye-catcher was the button shape - The most fabulous 80s detailing, glossy black triangles which, remarkably, actually make them really easy to fasten - Who'da thunk it?!? Then the mega long, mega wide belt which is stitched in at the seams so it won't fall off or move about and is just the one of the best fashion design features in the world in my opinion - You are always pulling the dress in at the right place meaning that the buttons don't pull and the seams sit in exactly the right place.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
I'm wearing a 16 here and the fit is PERFECT. There's plenty of room around the bust and the straight cut shape means that you can pull it in as tight or loose as you like with with the belt. The length is spot on for me, just below the knee, meaning I can wear it to work with courts or ankle boots and still look like a business bitch. I genuinely cannot see this dress being off my body when Winter sets in. The long (incredibly well made in terms of movement!) sleeves and thick fabric make it a wardrobe staple for the colder months and for this reason, and this reason alone, I cannot wait for them to start. .

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

There are so many other pieces of this range I'd love to get on my body, not least the incredible blue wool mix coat. I feel like this dress was made for me and reckon everyone who wears one of the Arched Eyebrow x Navabi items will feel the same way - There has been so much thought put into this range and it really shows. Bethany you have absolutely smashed it and I hope we get to see more...

Falling Back In Love With Fashion

We all lose our mojo sometimes. We get stuck in fashion ruts, we fall out of love with our beautiful bodies, we dont see ourselves the way that other people do. Then just as soon as you've lost it, you can find it again. AND I HAVE FOUND IT.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
Tie Front Blouse* - Lovedrobe
Mum Jeans - H&M
Shoes - Topshop (Similar
I really really enjoyed taking the pictures for this post because I actually felt great. Genuinely great (Hence the title of the post!) and a lot of that came from shaking up my wardrobe just a little bit. Up until last week I had managed to let peasant blouses pass me by, now all of a sudden I have three... (How do these things happen?!?) but with luxe embroidery, shirring and tassels this Lovedrobe number is definitely my favourite. It sits so beautifully and is really grown up, even with just a pair of ripped jeans.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

The top is an 18 and fits me like a glove. I'm sure a 16 would have been great too but with this style, the idea is that it's loose isn't it? So I'm going to say go for true to size. It's actually on offer at the moment for £28 and I cannot get across to you just how good value this is for such a well made blouse - I can see this in my wardrobe for years to come.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

These jeans are SO far from anything else I have - Highwaisted, ripped (I think the term is actually "trashed" when they're this ripped?!?) AND cropped. Bonkers but I just love them. They're and H&M size 44 which I believe is an 18. I haven't fit into an H&M 18 since I was a real world size 12 so this is, once again, evidence that you should always try things where you can. In fact, I'm reluctant to shop as much with H&M because it REALLY grates that they don't stock a wider size range in-store, this said (jeeeeez I'm fickle) there's so much more online - I managed to find heaps of styles I never imagined would be available in 18/20/22. So yes -  My morals can be turned by a green jumpsuit...

I'm sincerely hoping that this post is the first of many where you see me smiling and really really meaning it!

Floral Fancy with Yours Clothing

Ok, I said I was going to do a five minutes post but the words just aren't coming out of my fingers from inside of my head SO LOVELY PRETTY MAXI DRESS IT IS!

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
Bardot Maxi Dress* - Yours Clothing
Please play the Little House On The Prairie theme tune in your head whilst you view these pictures, I'm SO gutted I couldn't find a hill of tall grasses to run down but, with the number of bones I've broken since I've started this blog, I think it's very much for the best. This Yours Clothing dress is one of those lovely floaty light floral dresses that always looks good on other people but not me EXCEPT THIS ONE DOES.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

I can only put the success down to the fact that the shape is loose yet the elasticated ruching, which starts at the top and extends to the waist, offers just a enough structure for my liking - plus it keeps the dress from falling off which is nice.

SO. Maxi Dresses. They generally aren't are they? Especially not on me. I probably wouldn't class this one as maxi either, rather a long midi BUT I recently learnt that maxi dresses are tricky, especially light coloured ones on freshly cut grass - You get a weird green ombre effect and then when you wash them they just end up looking sad and grey and a bit like something Miss Havisham might wear. So long midi is just A-okay with me. Also, I quite like not wearing shoes. Mainly because I have broken toes but partly because I'm a raging hippie at heart.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

I'm wearing a 16 here which is absolutely perfect so my advice would be to buy true to size, unless you're between sizes, in which case size down because life's generally easier when your dress doesn't fall down in my opinion.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
If you're in the market for an "all occasion" Summer dress, Yours have some fabulous  maxi dresses right now - I'm a big fan of this long sleeved number on gorgeous Jess and Poppy looks INCREDIBLE in this bardot.

Summer Holiday Swimwear - Joanie Clothing

The tan has faded, the hangover has ended and this is the last in my Summer Holiday Swimwear Series *sniff* BUT AT LEAST I'M GOING OUT ON A CORKER!

www.terribletumbles.co.uk
Ariel Bikini - Joanie Clothing
When Joanie Clothing told me that they would be launching a swimwear collection, I was VERY excited - I knew that their fun yet classic retro style would lend itself perfectly to Hollywood poolside glamour. Boy was I right. For crying out loud, JUST LOOK AT THE PRINT ON THIS BIKINI - It's utterly stunning. If bikinis aren't your style, the tropical coral leaf pattern is also available in a longline swimsuit which is equally as glam.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

This set is an 18 - I could have sized down easily on the high waisted briefs but the top definitely needed to be bigger in order to facilitate the ol' wangers - This is another top which isn't really suitable for jiggling about in, I mean, there's no wire so it should be no surprise that the support is limited. However, this also means it's INCREDIBLY comfortable. If you're after looking mega hot whilst reclining (when am I not) the high waisted brief cut and keyhole tie back top detail is perfect. Plus, at only £25 for high quality repro swimwear, you genuinely cannot go wrong.

www.terribletumbles.co.uk

I've got a lot going on inside my big old head this week, which usually means that it's time for another Five Minutes... post. After that, I'm going to share some of the beautiful dresses I wore on my holidays, you know to get some mental equilibrium back into the world.
